The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team opened the 2014-15 season on Monday at CSU Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo. Junior Kathleen Kershisnik leads the Cowgirls after the first two rounds sitting tied for 20th place on the par-72, 7,223-yard Ptarmigan Country Club.
The Cowgirls are in 17th place in the 17 team field after the opening day with a two-round tally of 631 (+55). Wyoming shot a 312 (+24) in the first round and wrapped up the day with a 319 (+31).
"We are still trying to get a feel for our potential after first two rounds," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "This is a very good field and is testing us after two days of practice before opening up the season."
Kershisnik shot an impressive career-low score of 74 (+2) in the opening two rounds of action. She has a two-round tally of 148 (+4). Kershisnik fired four birdies in the second round with one in the first round. Junior Emily Woodard is in 67th place after two rounds. She finished with a score of 157 (+13) with rounds of 77 (+5) and 80 (+8). Sophomore Taylor Dorans, who is playing as an individual is tied for 71st place with a two-round mark of 159 (+15).
"It is a great field and I'm proud of the great effort Kathleen has put in after the first two rounds and all summer," Stender said.
Senior Samantha Stancato carded rounds of 77 (+5) and 83 (+11) for a two-round mark of 160 (+16). Wyoming's lone senior sits tied for 75th place. Sophomore Mackenzie Barrie finished at 166 (+22) with a first round of 84 (+12) and an 82 (+10) for the second round, as she sits tied for 86th place. Redshirt freshman Gabrielle Gibson, who is playing in her first event as a Cowgirl finished at 168 (+24).
Mountain West rival San Diego State sits in first place with a two-round score of 577 (+1). SDSU's Emma Henrikson and Sirene Blair lead the field at 139 (-5).
The Cowgirls wrap up play at the Ram Fall Classic tomorrow morning with one round. Fans can follow the action by clicking on the live results link above.
