Sept. 12, 2000

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

In their first competition of the2000 fall season, the Wyoming Cowgirl golf team placed 13th out of 15 teamsat the Colorado State Ram Fall Classic on Tuesday. Wyoming shot a 54-holetotal of 1001. Alison McGuire, a sophomore from Cheyenne, Wyo., wasWyoming's top individual finisher. McGuire shot a three-round score of 246to tie for 48th place out of 84 golfers.

Nevada won the team title with an 878. The Wolf Pack were led byAngie Yoon, who won medalist honors, shooting a nine-under par total of 207.The 54-hole tournament consisted of 36 holes on Monday followed by a final18-hole round on Tuesday. The tournament was played at Ptarmigan CountryClub in Windsor, Colo. The course measured 6,036 yards and played to a parof 72.

"We took a very young team to this first tournament," said UWwomen's golf coach Jill Johnson. "Other than Jessi (Santesson), the otherfour girls were freshmen and sophomores. Alison (McGuire) only played intwo tournaments for us as a true freshman last season, and Tara (Ludwig)played in only one tournament a year ago, prior to redshirting with a footinjury. Of course, Aryn (Cariveau) and her twin sister Ashley (Cariveau)are freshmen.

"Going into this week, I knew that it would be an adjustment for thefour younger girls to get used to this level of competition. I think itwill probably take them at least the first couple of tournaments to gettheir feet under them and get comfortable. I can't say enough about the wayAlison played for her first time out this season. She improved by about 20strokes from her score in this same tournament a year ago. Tara played tworeally good rounds (80 and 78 in the first two rounds), but I think she mayhave pressed a little in the final round wanting to put up a really goodscore. Jessi started out the tournament with a strong round of 78, but shehad a back problem flare up in the second round, and it made it hard for herto get any kind of rhythm in her swing."

The Cowgirls jump right back into competition this coming Friday andSaturday, Sept. 15 and 16 at the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis,Ore.
