ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -
Records continue to lay down for the University of Wyoming Women's Golf team as they set the UW low team round record in day one of the UNM/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Cowgirls currently sit in third place out of 16 teams, three of which are ranked in the top 25 and five others who received votes in the polls according to GolfWorld.com.
In the stout field loaded with teams from the Mountain West Conference, the Cowgirls shot an opening 297 (+5) on the par 73 UNM Championship Course and trail the 17th ranked Pepperdine Waves and the 23rd ranked and defending MWC Champion New Mexico Lady Lobos by five and three strokes respectively. The record breaking round is the second-time the Cowgirls have put their names in the books in as many tournaments this season.
The lady linksters are lead by true freshman Juanita Rico and her even par 73, which has her tied for sixth overall in the 90 player field. She is closely followed by sophomore Molly Black and junior Sarah Fogerty with opening 74's (+1), which has them tied for 14th place overall. Jenna Zamprelli is tied for 32nd with her round of 76 (+3) and junior Jonelle Martinez has to fight back from her opening 80 (+7). Johnna Jeffries is playing as an individual and shot an opening 79 (+6), which has her tied for 56th in her first tournament of the year.
"Our girls are really building some confidence coming off a good tournament in Fort Collins last week and they are starting to believe that they can, and should be on the same course as these teams," exclaimed UW head coach Josey Stender. "Juanita played more relaxed today, and it seemed as if she just needed to get that first tournament under her belt.
"As anyone who has been following Wyoming Women's Golf will tell you, we have a very balanced team that can be led by a different player every tournament, and that's what all the top-ranked teams have," added Stender.
"I am very proud of our Cowgirls," said Wyoming Director of Golf Joe Jensen. "Playing this well against such a premier field shows how much this program has evolved and what a great job Josey has done."
The Cowgirls will continue action tomorrow morning with the tournament teeing off at 8 a.m. and concluding on Saturday. Live stats can be found at www.golfstat.com.
