LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming women's golf team finished two rounds of play at the Denver University Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Denver, Colorado on Monday. UW played consistent team golf from top to bottom and sits 8th of 16 teams after two rounds with 612 strokes. Brigham Young University is leading the tournament with a score of 588. One final 18-hole round will be played on Tuesday.
"We really played consistent golf and as a team today," said UW head coach Jill Rettinger. "All of our rounds were in the 70's, except for two, and we are ahead of teams that we are constantly striving to beat.
"This is the best we've played for a two-day total in an awfully long time and I just can't say enough good things about how the girls competed today."
Freshman Laura Mengelkamp (Dover, Pa.) leads the Cowgirls for the third straight tournament and is tied for 17th of 88 golfers overall after rounds of 74 and 77. Also for the third straight outing, fellow freshman Lindsay Bauknecht (Vienna, Va.) played well for Wyoming with rounds of 75 and 79. Senior Shala Hanson shot her lowest rounds thus far in the fall season with a 79 and 77. Sophomore Whitney Hernandez bounced back from an early round of 83 to score her season-best 74 in the afternoon. Sophomore Michelle Camaione rounded out UW's play with scores of 77 and 82. Each team played five golfers and counted the four best scores.
The 54-hole DU Ron Moore Intercollegiate is being played at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club. Highlands Ranch plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,225 yards.
