LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Kim Nissen shot an opening round 76 on Monday, the low round of the season for the Wyoming Cowgirls, to place her in ninth place out of 42 golfers heading into the final round of the University of Denver Pioneer Intercollegiate. The DU Intercollegiate is being played at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club in Highlands Ranch, Colo.
Nissen is only five shots back of tournament leader Leanne Owens of Iowa State. Owens fired a one-under par 71 on Monday. Iowa State leads in the team competition, shooting a seven-under par total of 295. The Cyclones lead host Denver by six strokes. Wyoming is in sixth place in the seven-team field. UW opened the tournament with a 39-over par round of 327.
"Kim (Nissen) had a nice round today," said UW women's golf coach Jill Rettinger. "She shot a 37 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine, so she played consistently throughout the day. It is a tightly-grouped field of individuals, and Kim has an opportunity to move up even more with a good round on Tuesday."
The final round of the 36-hole event will be played on Tuesday at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club beginning at 8:30 a.m. The course measures 6,276 yards and plays to a par of 72.
Following the DU Pioneer Intercollegiate, the Cowgirls will travel to Albuquerque, N.M., where they will play in the University of New Mexico Dick McGuire Invitational on Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 26-28.
