Cowgirls Finish Sixth at the Denver Pioneer Intercollegiate

Wyoming women's golfer Kim Nissen shot a six-over par round of 78 on Tuesday in the final round of the Denver Pioneer Intercollegiate to place 16th in the field of 42 collegiate golfers. Nissen finished the 36-hole event with a total score of 154, 10-over par. Leanne Owens of Iowa State won the individual title with a one-under par total of 143 for the two-day event.

In the team competition, Owens led her Iowa State team to the championship. Iowa State won by three strokes over the host University of Denver Pioneers -- 595 to 598. Wyoming placed sixth in the seven-team field with a team score of 649.

"Kim (Nissen) continued her strong play on Tuesday," said UW women's golf coach Jill Rettinger. "She shot a 78 to go with her 76 on Monday. It was good to see her put together two nice rounds like that.

"Shala (Hanson) also played consistently this week, and the other three girls (Alison McGuire, Ashley Cariveau and Mimi Urish) all improved their scores from Monday to Tuesday."

Hanson shot rounds of 81 and 82 to tie for 29th place. Joining her at 29th was McGuire, who shot an 80 on Tuesday after an opening round 83. Cariveau improved from 87 on Monday to 82 on Tuesday to place 38th, and Urish lowered her score from 88 to 83 to place 39th.

The tournament was played at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club in Highlands Ranch, Colo.. The course measured 6,276 yards and played to a par of 72.

The Cowgirls will travel to Albuquerque, N.M., this week to play in the University of New Mexico Dick McGuire Invitational on Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 26-28.
