Junior Dana Zamprelli shot an even-par 73 during the first round and finished at 153 (+7) after two rounds to pace the University of Wyoming women's golf team on the first day at the New Mexico Dick McGuire Invitational. The Cowgirls sit in 17th as a team at 618 (+34), but are within nine strokes of five other schools. UW fired a 303 (+11) in the morning to sit as the third Mountain West school after the first round, but faltered with a 315 (+23) in the afternoon's second round to drop in the standings.

"We just got in some bad spots in the second round," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "Whether it was on the green or off the fairway. It was pretty hot, so I think fatigue set in a little bit both mentally and physically."

Zamprelli led UW's charge in the morning with the best round of any Cowgirl during the day. She didn't qualify to play in Wyoming's first event of the season, but made up for it with a 73 (E) and 80 (+7) today to sit tied for 51st.

"I'm definitely please with Dana coming out and playing the way she did," Stender said. "She's been going through some difficulties with her swing the last couple of weeks, so I'm proud of her for battling back through qualifying and doing well today."

The rest of the Cowgirls aren't far behind Zamprelli, though. All five of UW's student-athletes are within five strokes of each other. Senior Juanita Rico posted a 76 (+3) and 78 (+5) for a 154 (+8), while sophomore Stacey Blunt is one stroke behind after a 76 (+3) and 79 (+6). Senior Jenna Zamprelli carded two 78's (+5) to sit at 156 (+10), and freshman Samantha Stancato hit 78 (+5) and 80 (+7) for 158 (+12). Junior Taylor Smalley competed as an individual and shot a 79 (+6) and 83 (+10) for a 162 (+16).

"It's great to have such a competitive team, because when one girl struggles there is always another there to pick it up," Stender said. "Historically we've had success on this course, so it we can come back tomorrow and take advantage of the pars, I think we can have a solid finish."

The tournament concludes with one round tomorrow at 8 a.m. MT. Fans can follow live results by clicking on the link above.
