Cowgirls Battle Heat on Opening Day of Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate

First Round Results


The University of Wyoming women's golf team battled warm temperatures on the opening day of the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. The high temperature of the day hit 107 degrees with the Cowgirls finishing the first day in eighth place with a tally of 617 (+41). Wyoming is in a tight race, as UW is only six-strokes out of third place.

"We started out very well today," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We had to deal with the heat and the change in course conditions. I was very proud of the team and how they stayed to their game plan."

Wyoming got off to a fast start in the first 18 holes. Wyoming shot a 307 (+17) in the first round and shot a 312 (+24) in the second round.

The Cowgirls were led by freshman Megan Knadler, as she sits in sixth place in the 82-golfer field with a mark of 148 (+4). She fired rounds of 73 (+1) and 75 (+3). Her mark in the first round tied a career-low. Senior Kathleen Kershisnik is tied for 20th place with a two-round tally of 154 (+10). She fired a 74 (+2) in the first round and 80 (+8) in the second round. Sophomore Gabrielle Gibson is tied for 29th after a pair of rounds at 78 (+6).

"Megan learned a lot from her first event and I'm proud that she went out there and grinded the day out," Stender said.

Sophomore Klara Castillo shot an 80 (+8) in both rounds, as she is tied for 56th. Junior Taylor Dorans is tied for 63rd with a 163 (+19). Freshman Kaylee Knadler, playing as an individual is tied for 43rd at 158 (+14). Redshirt freshman Amanda Hinchey is tied for 73rd with senior Emily Woodard tied for 76th and junior Mackenzie Barrie in 79th place.

Mountain West foe San Jose State is in the team lead with a score of 597 (+15). UC Riverside is right behind them at 598 (+16). Hannah Facchini of UC Riverside is the individual leader after a two-round score of 143 (-1).

"We need to keep doing what we are doing, but we need to have a better short game tomorrow," Stender said.

The Cowgirls wrap up the tournament on Sunday with one 18-hole round slated to start at 8:30 a.m. MT.
