Sept. 24, 2001

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The first round of the University of Denver Pioneer Intercollegiate was a difficult one for the WyomingCowgirls. Wyoming finds itself in 14th place in the field of 14 teams after Monday's opening round.

The low round of the day for the Cowgirls was a nine-over par 81 by junior Kelli Hanson. Hanson is tied for 56th place in the field of 78golfers. The individual leader is Kelly Schaub of Denver, who fired a five-under par round of 67 on Monday. Colorado State leads in the teamcompetition. CSU shot an opening round of 294. Wyoming will enter Tuesday's final round with a 343 team score.

"None of the girls were able to put together a great round today," said UW women's golf coach Jill Johnson. "Kelli (Hanson) did shoot a39 on the back nine, Monday, which combined with a 42 on the front nine for an 81. That was Kelli's best round of the young season.

"Other than Kelli, we struggled putting up any good scores. This is only a 36-hole event, so we have to come out tomorrow with astrong round to make up some ground on the field."

The two-day event features one 18-hole round each on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24 and 25. The tournament is being played at theHighlands Ranch Golf Course in Highlands Ranch, Colo. The course measures 6,252 yards and plays to a par of 72.
