Gibson Leads Cowgirl Charge on Opening Day of Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate

University of Wyoming redshirt freshman Gabrielle Gibson led the Cowgirls with career-best rounds of 76 (+4) on the opening day of the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Saturday in Palm Desert, Calif. It is the first of two tournaments the Cowgirls will host this season, as UW is in 12th place at 632 (+56) at the event hosted at The Classic Club. Wyoming shot rounds of 316 (+28) in the first two rounds of the 16-team tournament.

“I was the proud of how focused and resilient the girls were in difficult conditions,” UW head coach Josey Stender said. “We put ourselves in good position to move up the leaderboard tomorrow. It was just a few holes that hurt us. We can improve tomorrow and really move up.”

Gibson was consistent all day in the high winds and heat. She finished with a combined score of 152 (+8), as she sits tied for ninth-place in the 92-golfer field. She fired a 35 (-1) in the first nine holes of the second round, where she fired three birdies.

“It was great to see Gabrielle stay solid all day long,” Stender said.

Senior Samantha Stancato also had a solid day, as she sits tied for 21st at 156 (+12). She recorded rounds of 77 (+5) and 79 (+7). Sophomore Taylor Dorans fired rounds of 81 (+9) and 80 (+8) for a two-round total of 161 (+17). She is tied for 49th place. Sophomore Mackenzie Barrie wrapped up the first day tied for 62nd place at 163 (+19) with rounds of 82 (+10) and 81 (+9). Junior Kathleen Kershisnik rounded out the Cowgirls' starting five at 169 (+25).

Freshman Sarah Hankins tied for the best individual scoring spot placing tied for 49th at 161 (+17). Junior Emily Woodard, also playing as an individual finished at 167 (+23).

Mountain West rival San Jose State leads the field at 601 (+25), after rounds of 301 (+13) and 300 (+12). UC Riverside is the next closest competitor at 608 (+32). The Spartan’s Megan Osland is the individual leader after the first two rounds at 145 (+1).
