UW Finishes 19th at the University of New Mexico Dick McGuire Invitational

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming women's golf team faced one of the nation's top fields when it competed in the 24th Annual Dick McGuire Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico this past weekend. The tournament concluded on Saturday with the Cowgirls finishing in the 19th and final position in the team standings.

Wyoming finished the 54-hole event with a score of 1,004. Host New Mexico captured the team title with a three-round score of 891. The Lobos won by seven strokes over second-place Washington and Pepperdine -- both the Huskies and Pepperdine posted scores of 898.

Kim Nissen was Wyoming's top finisher. Nissen tied for 69th in the field of 105 golfers. She shot a three-day total of 243, 24-over par.

"This was definitely an outstanding field of teams," said UW women's golf coach Jill Rettinger. "No one on our team could really get going this week. Kim (Nissen) did shoot a nice round of 78 on Saturday, but overall we just couldn't put a stretch of good holes together.

"Kim played well earlier in the week at Denver tournament, shooting rounds of 76 and 78 to place 16th. But she got off to a slow start in Albuquerque with an 81, followed by an 84, and that pretty much took her out of running for a Top 25 finish.

"Alison McGuire had a good round on Friday with a 79, but she struggled on Saturday, with a round of 89.

"We've had a busy week this week, playing tournament rounds in five out of the last six days. Now we'll have about 10 days off before we play in Boulder (Colo.) on Oct. 7-8."

The individual title at the McGuire Invitational ended in a two-way tie between Katherine Hull of Pepperdine and Lisa Meldrum of Oklahoma. Both finished with eight-under par totals of 211.

The tournament was played at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course. The course measured 6,069 yards and played to a par of 73.

The Cowgirls' next competition will be in Boulder, Colo., on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 7-8 at the University of Colorado Heather Farr Memorial.
