University of Wyoming senior Juanita Rico tied her career low with a 69 (-3) to sit atop the individual leaderboard with UC Irvine's Sarah Baek after the first day of the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic at Dayton Valley Golf Club. As a team, the Cowgirls posted a season-low 300 (+12), trailing only UC Irvine at 298 (+10) in the 10-team field. Today's second round was cancelled due to high winds and will be played tomorrow morning as the final round.

"Today's weather conditions were to our advantage a little because we do have to contend with windy conditions sometimes in Laramie," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "We've taught our girls that grinding mentality, that when they face adverse conditions they do well and thrive because of their mental toughness."

Wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour couldn't slow down Rico today. The UW senior posted 34 on the front nine and 35 on the back nine to tie her personal best and the second-best round in Cowgirl history. She also shot a 69 (-3) at the CU/Heather Farr Memorial in the fall of 2008.

"Juanita just didn't make any mistakes today," Stender said. "She had one bogey on her card and could have shot even lower as well as she was striking the ball. Her round is great momentum not only for her individually, but our other girls can feed off that also."

Rico got help from Jenna Zamprelli, as the fellow senior fired a season-best 73 (+1) during the round. Zamprelli started with a 38 on the front nine, but lowered her score to a 35 on the back nine to sit tied for fourth.

"Juanita's and Jenna's rounds today, under the conditions they were in, were phenomenal scores," Stender said. "The weather started out decent but it progressively got windier, to the point where the wind was blowing balls sitting on the green in the afternoon."

Freshman Samantha Stancato and sophomore Stacey Blunt both carded a 79 (+7) on the day to sit tied for 27th, while junior Dana Zamprelli rounded out UW's top five with an 85 (+13). Junior Taylor Smalley and sophomore Emily Wood played as individuals and notched scores of 83 (+11).

"The key to us doing well tomorrow is going to be our 3-4-5 scorers," Stender said. "They need to go out there with the mentally they are playing against the course. Everyone has to play in the wind and our girls need to continue to be patient with it."

Tomorrow's second and final round will begin at 9:30 a.m. MT.
