Senior Juanita Rico shot a 76 (+4) on Tuesday at the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic to claim third individually at 145 (+1) and pace University of Wyoming women's golf to a third-place team finish in windy conditions at Dayton Valley Golf Club. The Cowgirls notched a 304 (+16) during the second round to tie with Nevada at 604 (+28) in the final standings, while San Francisco won the 10-team field at 598 (+22).

"It really helped our frame of mind to play well in these tough conditions the last two days," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "It will give us that extra little boost of confidence that we can face anything and play well. We'll use this performance as motivation and momentum going into our tournament."

After shooting a 69 (-3) on Monday to finish the day atop the leaderboard, Rico dropped into a tie for third in the final standings on Tuesday with a total of 145 (+1). Her performance was the highest finish for a UW women's golfer since she placed second at the Oregon State Giustina Memorial in the fall of 2009. UW also finished third as a team at that tournament.

"Juanita's finish reaffirms that what she's being doing physically and mentally is working," Stender said. "The difference is she got some puts to drop here. Otherwise her game is very consistent across the board."

Sophomore Stacey Blunt had UW's best scorecard in the second round, as she tied a career-low with a 73 (+1). Her score was six strokes better than Monday's and put her at 152 (+8) to jump her from 27th to 10th in the 57-person field. Senior Jenna Zamprelli finished sixth overall with a 77 (+5) in the second round to stand at 150 (+6), as she and Blunt both recorded their first career top-ten finishes.

"It's a real credit to Stacey and her self-awareness that she learned from a couple tough rounds at New Mexico and used it to her advantage," Stender said. "It's another experience that she can draw off going forward. Jenna has the ability to be consistent and lead this team on a weekly basis and I think she started to show it at this tournament."

Freshman Samantha Stancato carded a 78 (+6) to finish tied for 31st at 157 (+13), while junior Dana Zamprelli shot an 82 (+10) for a 167 (+23). Junior Taylor Smalley and sophomore Emily Wood played as individuals, finishing at 160 (+16) and 164 (+20) with a 77 (+5) and 81 (+9), respectively, in the second round.

Wyoming concludes the fall portion of its 2011-12 season by hosting the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
