The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team opened the New Mexico State Invitational on Monday afternoon in Las Cruces, N.M. The Cowgirls were once again paced by redshirt freshman Gabrielle Gibson, who is tied for 29th place after the opening round of play on the par- 72, 6,258-yard New Mexico State Golf Course.
“I was pleased with the effort, the intensity and focus,” UW head coach Josey Stender said. “We had some positive momentum from our tournament and our confidence is growing.”
The Cowgirls sit tied for 11th-place in the 14-team field after the opening day carding a team score of 302 (+14). It is the lowest round of the season for the Cowgirls.
Gibson fired a career-low round of 74 (+2) on Monday. It also tied for the lowest score by a Cowgirl this season, as junior Kathleen Kershisnik hit the mark at the CSU Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic. Gibson is tied for 29th place in the 81-golfer field. Senior Samantha Stancato is tied for 40th place after recording a 75 (+3).
“It was good to see a steady performance from everyone especially Gabrielle,” Stender said.
Sophomore Mackenzie Barrie is tied for 46th place after turning in a scorecard of 76 (+4), as she tied a season-low with the round. Sophomore Taylor Dorans and freshman Sarah Hankins finished at 77 (+5) sitting tied for 51st place. Kershisnik, playing as an individual, ended play at 76 (+4), as she is tied for 46th place. Freshman Klara Castillo is tied for 70th after a round of 80 (+8).
Idaho leads the field after the first day with an impressive opening round of 284 (-4). Grand Canyon’s Charlotte Jaengkit leads the individual leaderboard at 66 (-6).
“This tournament is a marathon compared to the others and this is an extremely talented field we are up against,” Stender said.
