LAS CRUCES, N.M. -
Junior Samantha Stancato hit a 75 (+3) to pace the University of Wyoming women's golf team to 11th in the teams standings at 305 (+17) after Monday's first round of the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State. UC Irvine leads the 14-team field at 290 (+2) with two rounds still to be played over the next two days.
"We're in good shape, we played pretty solid today and are within reach of a few teams," UW Director Golf Joe Jensen said. "I was pleased with how we started and think the girls understood and showed the value of getting off to a good start and how from here on out that can help us get past a few solid teams."
Stancato is tied for 24th after the first round, with senior Stacey Blunt one stroke off at 76 (+4) in a tie for 34th. Sophomore Kathleen Kershinik and senior Emily Wood are tied for 41st with 77 (+5) in the first round. Freshman Taylor Dorans hit an 80 (+8) to sit tied for 59th, while Emily Woodard, who is playing as an individual, carded a first round score of 83 (+11).
"I want to do exactly what we did today and keep that going the rest of the week," Jensen said. "Limit the mental mistakes, continue to be disciplined, hit the fairways and a lot of greens and we'll be right in position and where we need to be."
Tuesday's second round tees off at 8:30 a.m. MT. Fans can follow live stats on GolfStat.com.
