LAS CRUCES, N.M. -
The second-best round in school history and a season-low of 293 (+5) moved the University of Wyoming women's golf team into eighth place after Tuesday's second round of the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State. UC Irvine is still the team leader of the 14-team field at 577 (+1) with the final round to be played tomorrow.
"Today was another good day of golf but we know we still have one more round to go," said UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen. "We improved off of yesterday's first round and we know that if we continue to be disciplined and focus on our strengths, we can once again jump past some teams and move up a few spots."
The second round score for UW is the second lowest team round in the history of the program. In 2008 at the CU/Heather Farr Memorial Invitational, the Cowgirls shot 291 (+3).
Seniors Stacey Blunt and Emily Wood and also freshman Taylor Dorans all carded career lows for Wyoming. Blunt and Wood each shot a 72 (E) during the second round to sit tied for 19th with a 148 (+4) and tied for 26th with 149 (+5), respectively. As Dorans carded a 76 (+4) to sit tied for 57th with 156 (+12).
Junior Samantha Stancato tied her season low with a round two score of 73 (+1). She sits tied for 19th with 148 (+4). Sophomore Kathleen Kershisnik shot another 77 (+5) on Tuesday to sit tied 47th with the final round remaining. Junior Emily Woodard, playing as an individual, carded an 84 (+12) during the second round.
"The girls were confident today and with that it showed in a good tournament field with some great teams that we can compete," Jensen added. "If we stick with the process we can do it all again tomorrow. I know that we aren't satisfied with eighth place, so we just need to keep pushing, working hard and see how the final round goes."
Wednesday's third and final round tees off at 8:30 a.m. MT. Fans can follow live stats on GolfStat.com.
