Cowgirl Golf Team in 12th at the CU Heather Farr Memorial Tournament

Oct. 7, 2002

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Led by seniors Kim Nissen and Alison McGuire, the Wyoming Cowgirl golf team will enter the final round of the Heather Farr Memorial golf tournament in 12th place on Tuesday. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Colorado at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club in Broomfield, Colo.

Nissen and McGuire both fired opening rounds of six-over par 78 on Monday to tie for 27th place in the field of 90 women's golfers. UW is in 12th place out of 16 teams. The Cowgirls shot a 36-over par total of 324. Wyoming is only 10 strokes behind seventh place Washington State in a tightly-grouped field.

Nevada leads in the team standings by three strokes over host CU -- 298 to 301. In the individual race, Maria Valente of Idaho and Lynette Duran of Colorado State are tied at one-under par 71.

"Kim (Nissen) and Alison (McGuire) are both in position for a really nice finish," said UW women's golf coach Jill Rettinger. "They are only four shots out of the Top 10 individuals and are five shots out of the Top Five.

"If we can have a couple of other girls step up in Tuesday's final round, we have a chance to make a move on several other teams in the team standings.

"Monday's round tied for our second best round of the fall season, so I'm happy with the performance the girls had today. But we still need to continue to improve, and our younger players need to help us out with a couple of low scores on Tuesday."

The final round of the Heather Farr Memorial will tee off at 8:30 a.m. at the Interlocken Golf Club. The course plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,158 yards.

Following the CU Heather Farr Memorial, the Cowgirls will wrapup their 2002 fall season at the Boise State Fall Classic on Oct. 21-22.
