Cowgirls Move Up Two Spots at the CU Heather Farr Memorial Tournament

Oct. 8, 2002

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming Cowgirls improved their team score by 12 strokes on Tuesday and moved up two spots from 12th place to finish 10th out of 16 teams at the University of Colorado Heather Farr Memorial Tournament.

Wyoming was led by seniors Kim Nissen and Alison McGuire, who shot identical rounds of 78 on Tuesday to tie for 27th place in the field of 90 women's golfers. Both Nissen and McGuire finished with 36-hole scores of 156. The low round of the day for Wyoming was fired by junior Ashley Cariveau. Cariveau shot a four-over par 76 on Tuesday, and finished tied for 43rd at 160.

The University of Denver edged out first-round leader Nevada for the team title -- 603 to 604. Nevada held a three-stroke lead over the University of Colorado heading into Tuesday's final round, and Nevada was nine strokes ahead of DU. But Denver fired a final round of 296 to overtake Nevada, which shot a team score of 306 on Tuesday. In the individual race, Nicole Keller of Idaho won a playoff with Erin Kerr of Colorado to win the individual crown. Both players concluded the original 36 holes tied at even par 144.

"One of our goals heading into the final round was to beat both teams we were paired with, and we did that today beating Montana State and Weber State," said UW women's golf coach Jill Rettinger. "We also wanted at least three individual rounds in 70s, and we accomplished that with Kim (Nissen), Alison (McGuire) and Ashley (Cariveau) all shooting in the 70s.

"Ashley (Cariveau) was thrilled with her 76. That was the best tournament round of her career.

"I'm hoping that this is a turning point to show the girls they can come up with a big round when they need it. It was good to see us move up on the final day of a tournament. I think this will give us a lot of confidence going into our final two tournaments of the fall."

The CU Heather Farr Memorial was played at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club in Broomfield, Colo. The course played to a par of 72 and measured 6,158 yards.

Following the CU Heather Farr Memorial, the Cowgirls will compete at the Boise State Fall Classic on Oct. 21-22.
