Senior Juanita Rico and sophomore Stacey Blunt earned top-10 finishes with a 78 (+6) and 74 (+2), respectively, on Sunday to help the University of Wyoming women's golf team finish third as host of the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club. The placing gave UW its first back-to-back, top-three finishes under head coach Josey Stender.

"I'm very proud of the way our girls played this week at Nevada and in our tournament," Stender said. "To reach our team goal of a top three finish for two-straight competitions in competitive fields shows just how hard these girls worked in the offseason and this fall. Puting on this tournament was great for our program and our student-athletes. The Classic Club made everything top-notch for us."

San Diego State took home the team title at 888 (+24) and the individual title with Christine Wong's 216 (E). Northern Arizona's Kaitlen Parsons took second individually at 220 (+4), while Fresno State claimed second in the 15-team field with a 904 (+40).

"I'd like to thank Troon Golf and The Classic Club for helping us host a first-class event this weekend and allowing us back for a men's event this spring," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "Our great relationship with both allows us to host two quality events in Palm Desert. I'm proud of the way the Cowgirls have played in the last two events with top-three finishes in both."

Rico and Blunt led UW's charge for the second tournament in a row, after the duo also finished in the top 10 at the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic earlier in the week. Rico posted a 226 (+10) to tie for sixth overall, while Blunt carded a 228 (+12) in a tie for eighth. Wyoming claimed a total of five top-10 finishers in the last two events.

"Stacey and Juanita really came through for the team again," Stender said. "Stacey once again shot her best on the final day and Juanita continued to compete for that individual title. She will get a win sooner or later with the way she's playing."

Senior Jenna Zamprelli and junior Dana Zamprelli tied for 27th in the standings at 237 (+21) after shooting an 83 (+11) and 77 (+5), respectively, in the final round. Junior Taylor Smalley posted a 78 (+6) to round out UW's top five with a 243 (+27) and tie for 41st. Freshman Samantha Stancato and sophomore Emily Wood played as individuals, finishing at 242 (+26) and 247 (+31).

With the fall portion of the 2011-12 season completed, the Cowgirls return to action at the Northern Arizona Red Rocks Invitational on March 3-4 in Sedona, Ariz.

"Our team's performance this fall, and especially over the last week, has left me very excited for the spring season to come," Stender said. "We've shown ourselves that if we work hard enough, the results will come. Now we need to keep that effort and momentum going."
