LAS CRUCES, N.M. -
The University of Wyoming women's golf team recorded the second-best team score in school history with an 897 (+33) to finish eighth in the final team standings at the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate on Wednesday. Portland State topped the 14-team field at 867 (+3). The Cowgirls shot a 299 (+11) in the final round to give them their best score since UW shot an 898 (+34) at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in 2009. The Cowgirls were led by senior Stacey Blunt who fired a 73 (+1) during the final round to finish tied for 12th.
"We had a very good finish in a good field," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "We were able to close the gap on a few teams ahead of us and beat New Mexico State on their home course."
The total for the Cowgirls was just five strokes off the school-record 891 (+27) Wyoming shot at the CU/Heather Farr Memorial Invitational in 2008.
Blunt's third-round score brought her to a total of 221 (+5) for the senior's first top-25 finish this season and seventh of her career. Senior Emily Wood shot another solid round with a 73 (+1) to bring her total to 222 (+6) tying for 17th. It was also her first top-25 finish this season and fourth of her career. Junior Samantha Stancato carded a 77 (+5) on the final day to finish tied for 27th with 225 (+9). Sophomore Kathleen Kershisnik shot her best round of the tournament with a 76 (+4) and finished tied for 49th with a 230 (+14), while freshman Taylor Dorans tied for 67th after a third-round score of 82 (+10) to finish with 238 (+22). Emily Woodard, playing as an individual, finished the tournament with 242 (+26) after shooting her best round on Wednesday with a 75 (+3).
"I was pleased with their effort from start to finish," Jensen added. "The girls worked hard and competed and their results from this tournament should help boost confidence from here going forward."
Wyoming concludes the fall season by hosting the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Oct. 12-13 at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
