Wyoming Women's Golf Team In 14th After First Round Of The CU Tournament

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The first round of the 2000University of Colorado Heather Farr Memorial Golf Tournament didn't go theway the Wyoming Cowgirls had hoped. Wyoming finds itself in the bottom spotin the 14-team field after Monday's first round. Wyoming shot an openinground 333, trailing its next closest competitor Montana State by threestrokes. San Diego State leads in the team competition with an openinground of 301.

In the individual competition, Mayumi Motoyama of Colorado State andJoanne Clingan of San Diego State share the lead with three-under par roundsof 69. Wyoming's top individuals on Monday were senior Jana Johnson andsophomore Kim Nissen, who shot identical 10-over par rounds of 82. Johnsonand Nissen are tied for 47th in the field of 78 women's golfers.

"We had a number of individuals play solid rounds today, but wedidn't have anyone really shoot an outstanding score," said UW women's golfcoach Jill Johnson. "Jana (Johnson) was the most consistent, shooting 41 onthe front nine followed by 41 on the back. Kim (Nissen) got off to a slowstart with a 46 on the front nine, but she really got her game going on theback nine, firing a 36. Jessi (Santesson) and Tara (Ludwig) each played asolid back nine with 41s.

"Throughout the fall season, we've been focusing on gainingconfidence and making improvement every time out. That is what I want thegirls to focus on tomorrow."

The tournament is being played on the Omni Interlocken Golf Club inBroomfield, Colo. The course measures 6,069 yards and plays to a par of 72.The tournament will conclude on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
