The University of Wyoming women's golf team finished the first round of competition at TPC Virginia Beach Women's Intercollegiate in third place of 13 teams. Wyoming shot a 321 and sits seven strokes behind leader Ohio, and only one shot behind the second place team, Florida Atlantic. The 36-hole tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia, will conclude Monday with a final round.
UW freshman Laura Mengelkamp fired a first round score of 76 and is in third place individually of 64 golfers, only two strokes out of the tournament lead. Mengelkamp is followed closely by senior Shala Hanson, whose 79 has her tied for tenth, and fellow freshman Lindsay Bauknecht, who shot an 80 and is tied for 14th.
Ohio's Sara Ann Palmer is tied for first place with High Point's Kate O'Sullivan. Each set the day one pace with a round of two-over-par 74.
Each team played five golfers and counted the four best scores.
The two-day tournament is being played at TPC at Virginia Beach. TPC at Virginia Beach plays to a par of 72 and measures 5,852 yards.
