LARAMIE, Wyo. -
In their final competition of the fall season the University of Wyoming women's golf team posted their highest team finish of this year despite windy conditions, and placed third of 13 teams at TPC Virginia Beach Women's Intercollegiate. Wyoming's two-round total of 645 placed them behind tournament champion Ohio and runner-up Florida Atlantic. UW's previous best was 4th out of 11 teams at the Inland Empire Intercollegiate.
UW freshman Laura Mengelkamp narrowly missed an individual title, finishing second of 64 golfers, one stroke out of the lead. Mengelkamp's second round 76 mirrored her first day total. The other four Cowgirls were grouped closely together with Lindsay Bauknecht tied for 17th, Shala Hanson and Whitney Hernandez tied for 20th and Michelle Camaione tied for 29th.
"We played a pretty solid tournament and I'm happy with our team finish," said UW head coach Jill Rettinger. "Finishing third will be a good confidence builder and we will have high expectations as we practice this winter.
"Laura played well and was excited with her second place finish against some teams and players that we don't normally see. It was good for us to come to the east coast and play these schools, especially since several of our players are from this area of the country."
High Point's Kate O'Sullivan took the individual title with a two round total of 151, one stroke ahead of Mengelkamp.
Each team played five golfers and counted the four best scores.
The two-day, 36-hole tournament was played at TPC at Virginia Beach in Virginia Beach, Virginia. TPC at Virginia Beach plays to a par of 72 and measures 5,852 yards.
Wyoming's next competition comes in the spring of 2005 when they travel to Goodyear, Arizona for the Lady Bobcat Invitational, March 7-9.
