LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming Women's Golf team will travel to Chula Vista, Calif., to compete in the three-day San Diego State Lady Aztec Spring Classic, Sunday through Tuesday. The 54-hole tournament will take place at the Salt Creek Golf Course, beginning at 7 a.m.
The Cowgirls are coming off their first team title in 10 years at the Bronco Fall Invitational last October and they are ready to tee it up for the first time in 2009.
"This will be the earliest that we have ever started since I have been here and I really think the girls are ready to get going," said fourth year UW head coach Josey Stender. "It is a very strong field and will be a good test for us."
In the 18-team field there are five teams ranked in the top-50 according to golfweek.com. The University of San Francisco leads the field ranked 27th, followed by San Jose State ranked 30th.
The Cowgirls ended last fall with a 36-hole victory in Boise, Idaho and have been feeding off that momentum indoors for four months. They are led by freshman Juanita Rico who has a team leading 75.57 stroke average thus far this season.
"As a team we played very well during the 2008 portion of our schedule and we look forward to keeping the ball rolling," said Stender.
