LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming women's golf team will play host to 18 teams in Maricopa, Ariz., on April 4-5, for the annual Wyoming Cowgirl Classic. The two-day tournament will be held at the par-72, 6,231 yard Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course.
Teams scheduled to compete include Boise State, UC-Riverside, Eastern Washington, Grand Canyon, Idaho, Montana, Montana State, Nevada, Northern Arizona, Portland State, Sacramento State, Santa Clara, Seattle, Southern Utah, Utah Valley, UTEP, Washington State, Weber State and Wyoming.
A shotgun start for the first 36 holes at 8:45 a.m. MT, on Monday will begin this year's Cowgirl Classic. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday.
At the event in 2015, Nevada ran away with the team title with a score of 888 (+24). Washington State finished second, while Lamar moved up one spot on the final day to finish third. Boise State's Genevieve Ling won individual medalist honors with a 216 (E) after firing a 71 (-1) during the final round. Wyoming finished 20th with a three-round total of 939 (+75). Samantha Stancato was UW's top-finisher, as she placed 25th with a 226 (+10).
During the Cowgirls last event on the links at the MountainView Collegiate, freshman Megan Knadler finished as the top golfer for UW. She tied for 42nd with a score of 225 (+9). Knadler also led the team at the BYU Entrada Classic with a three-round score of 237 (+21) to tie for 34th place, while sophomore Gabrielle Gibson placed second at the Grand Canyon Invite on Feb. 24. She fired a 225 (+12) for the best finish of her career and second career top-five finish.
