CHANDLER, Ariz. -
The University of Wyoming women's golf team will be in Chandler, Ariz. on Monday and Tuesday, April 7-8, for the second annual Cowgirl Classic at Ocotillo Golf Resort. The tournament will play 54 holes, 36 on the first day and 18 on the second day.
"We have been looking forward to this event since last year and the girls have been working really hard to showcase their talents," said Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender. "Ocotillo is an amazing facility and we are very fortunate to host our home event there. We have a very competitive field this year, doubling the number of players. If we can take advantage of our course knowledge and the confidence we have had this spring I think we can do very well."
Wyoming Cowgirl senior Laura Mengelkamp, who finished fourth in the Cowgirl Classic last season, is currently leading UW through the 2007-08 season. Mengelkamp leads the Cowgirls with a stroke average of 77.63 and is currently 16th on the Mountain West Conference Leaderboard for women's golf.
The 2007 Cowgirl Classic was won by Northern Arizona University, who will compete again this year. The tournament's individual winner, Ali Carter, was also from Northern Arizona University.
The Cowgirl Classic has grown significantly from last year, welcoming 16 teams to the tournament in 2008 up from the nine that competed last year. The field includes Nevada, the afore-mentioned NAU, Wichita State, as well as multiple schools from the western region of the country.
Ocotillo Golf Resort is an award-winning 27-hole Troon Golf facility, designed by Ted Robinson. The layout of waterscaped and picturesque holes, contains more water hazards than any other course in the state of Arizona.
