Women's Golf Tee's it up at MWC Championships

SEASIDE, Calif., (April 14, 2010) -- The 2010 Mountain West Conference Championships for the University of Wyoming women's golf team is set to get underway Thursday April 15 through Saturday April 17, in Seaside, Calif.

The Cowgirls enter the final tournament of the year with the reigning individual champion in senior Jonelle Martinez playing on the same course from a year ago. The Black Horse Golf Course will be the site where New Mexico came away with their second straight MWC team title with a three-day total of 903 (+39).

Martinez led the Cowgirls last season with her three round total of 221 (+5), two strokes better than junior Britney Choy of New Mexico. Martinez was also named to the All-Conference squad for the first time in her career.

Currently the Cowgirls are led by sophomore Juanita Rico and junior Molly Black with their 17th and 18th respective conference rankings for stroke average. Rico averages 76.44 throughout her 27 rounds thus far this season. Black is just behind with a stroke average of 76.56.

Last season the Cowgirls as a team finished sixth out of seven teams with a final total of 942 (+78) strokes.

The Cowgirls will have two freshman compete in their first ever MWC Championships in Dana Zamprelli and Taylor Smalley. Zamprelli has competed in 24 rounds this season while Smalley has participated in 21, both enter with more experience than most freshman.

The championships will be one round of 18 holes each day and live results will be available at either www.themwc.com or www.golfstat.com.
