The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team opens the 2014 Mountain West Championship on Thursday morning on the par-72, 6,324-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The three-day tournament runs Thursday through Saturday. The nine-team field in this season's event will be the largest in MW Championship history. UW is set to tee off Thursday at 9:30 a.m. MT. The Cowgirls will be paired with Fresno State and New Mexico to open the tournament. The event will then tee off at 8 a.m. MT on Friday and Saturday. The Dinah Shore Tournament Course was the host of the Kraft Nabisco Championship, an LPGA Major event that is played in early April.
The Cowgirls return an abundance of experience for this season's MW Championship. Senior Stacey Blunt will be playing in her fourth MW Championship. Senior Emily Wood and junior Samantha Stancato will be playing in their third MW Championship.
The Cowgirls are coming off a strong finish that saw the Cowgirls shoot their second-lowest scoring tally of the spring in the final round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic two week ago with a 303 (+15). Blunt and sophomore Emily Woodard led the Cowgirls in the final regular season tournament of the season each tallying a 231 (+15), finishing tied for 35th. Freshman Mackenzie Barrie, making her first MW Championship appearance finished 39th at the Cowgirl Classic with a 232 (+16). Senior Emily Wood also closed out the Cowgirl Classic on a high note with a 75 (+3).
The Cowgirls finished eighth in last season's Mountain West Championships finishing the event at 969 (+105). UNLV won the team title last season with its three-round total of 904 (+40). Wood was UW's top finisher at 238 (+22). New Mexico's Manon DeRoey earned individual medalist honors with a score of 223 (+7).
