May 22, 2003

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming senior golfer Alison McGuire has been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District VII At-Large Team as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). McGuire's selection marks the second consecutive year that she has earned the honor.

McGuire, of Cheyenne, Wyo., achieved a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average in political science, with a minor in international studies. The graduate of Cheyenne Central High School, she is one of only 10 female student-athletes to be selected to the 2003 Women's At-Large First Team in District VII.

The at-large team selections are made from the sports of: crew (women only), fencing, field hockey (women only), golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball (men only), water polo and wrestling (men only). Those student-athletes chosen First Team All-District qualify for the national ballot. The At-Large Academic All-America team for women is scheduled to be released on Thursday, June 12.

District VII consists of the states of: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming; and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Other academic honors she has achieved during her four years at the University of Wyoming include being named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar team twice -- in 2001 and 2002. She is a three-time Mountain West Conference Academic All-Conference selection. Her senior year, she was named the 2003 Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Political Science at UW.

On the golf course, McGuire was elected a team captain for the 2002-03 season. She played in all 11 of Wyoming's tournaments as a senior, and played in the last 21 consecutive tournaments in which Wyoming participated. Her best finish as a senior was a 20th-place showing, out of 90 individuals, at the Boise State Fall Classic.

She is the daughter of Jan and Pat McGuire of Cheyenne.

There were 63 candidates on the all-district ballot, representing 19 member institutions. The average grade point average for the 10 members of the first team was 3.91.

In addition to the at-large teams, Verizon also sponsors Academic All-America teams in the sports of: women's volleyball, football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and cross country.
