Cowgirl Golfer Jessi Santesson Wins Wyoming Amateur

July 22, 1999

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming junior golfer Jessi Santesson of Worland, Wyo., won the Wyoming State Amateur played at the Powell Country Club in Powell, Wyo., July 16-18.

It was Santesson's first Wyoming State Amateur Championship. She defeated Mary Ann Morrison, who has a number of Wyoming State Amateur titles to her credit. Santesson shot rounds of 77, 76 and 77 for a total of 230.

"Jessi (Santesson) showed a lot of heart in winning her first state amateur," said University of Wyoming womens golf coach Jill Johnson. "Jessi had a three-stroke lead heading into the final round. She dropped two shots out of the lead on the front nine, but did a great job of battling back to shoot a one-under par 35 on the back for the win. To come from behind and defeat a veteran champion like Mary Ann Morrison has to give Jessi a lot of confidence in her game right now."

Santesson played in nine of 10 tournaments for the University of Wyoming during the 1998-99 season. She had an outstanding tournament at the Campbell University Tournament in North Carolina, placing 12th while helping lead Wyoming to a second-place team finish. Santesson will be a junior this coming season. She is the daughter of JoAnn and Norman Santesson of Worland, Wyo.
