The Wyoming women's golf team will conclude the fall portion of its 2011-12 schedule by hosting the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate at the prestigious Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif., on Saturday and Sunday.

The Cowgirls will play host to 15 teams and more than 80 student-athletes on the par-72 course that is set up at 6,144 yards. The first two rounds of 18 holes each will commence on Saturday with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. PT, while Sunday's final 18 holes will start at the same time. This is the first time the Cowgirls have hosted a fall tournament under head coach Josey Stender.

"Our expectations for this tournament are pretty high, based on how we played earlier this week at Nevada," Stender said. "We've played in three quality tournaments already so we have a good groove going. Placing in the top five team wise at our tournament is a realistic goal, and we have a couple girls that can compete for the individual title as well."

The Cowgirls are coming off a great showing on Monday and Tuesday at the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic in Dayton, Nev. Senior Juanita Rico posted her best finish since the fall of 2009 by placing third at 145 (+1) to lead UW to a third-place finish in the team standings. Fellow senior Jenna Zamprelli and sophomore Stacey Blunt both recorded their first career top-10 finishes at sixth and 10th, respectively. Zamprelli fired a 150 (+6) and Blunt carded a 152 (+8). The trio will be joined by freshman Samantha Stancato and junior Taylor Smalley in Palm Desert, while junior Dana Zamprelli and sophomore Emily Wood will play as individuals.

"When you can host a tournament on a premier course like this, it really helps your program," Stender said. "Plus our girls are excited to play in an event that has our name on it. It gives them a little bit of extra pride and confidence knowing they are on the course representing our school."

Complete results and a recap will be posted on WyomingAthletics.com following each day.
