The 1998 season marks the fourth year for womens soccer at the University of Wyoming. It also marks the fourth year of Liza Grant's head coaching career at the collegiate level. Prior to coaching for Wyoming, Grant served as an assistant coach at the University of Washington for two years under Dang Pibulvech, who is considered one of the top collegiate soccer coaches in the country.
She began her coaching career at Colorado College in 1986, under Pibulvech. In her first season as an assistant, Colorado College compiled a 17-4-1 record, and lost to North Carolina in the NCAA finals.
In 1987, Grant moved to high school athletics. She was the head girls soccer coach at Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass. She was also the assistant girl's basketball coach and head lacrosse coach. From 1989 through 1991, she was head coach of the New England high school lacrosse all-star team which won three consecutive national championships.
Grant played for Colorado College (Colorado Springs, Colo.) from 1982-1985. She graduated in 1986 with a degree in mathematics. While there, she was an outstanding soccer and lacrosse player. During her playing career, the Tigers competed in two NCAA Soccer Championships, advancing to the Final Four her senior season. She was an All-American midfielder in 1984, and an All-Region player from 1983-1985.
Grant's philosophy is to recruit strong, well-disciplined student-athletes. She looks for competitors who have a strong technical and tactical background and a love for the game of soccer. Coach Grant looks for individuals who will be solid contributors on and off the field.
"We're happy with the type of players we're getting", says Grant. "The academic strength of the University of Wyoming and the beauty of the surrounding region helps us attract quality athletes to our program, and to this point we are pleased with the high level of our players."
Grant has also been actively involved with the Region IV Olympic Development Program (ODP) for four years, 1995-1998, and has served as an assistant coach for the U16 ODP soccer team for the last two years. She has traveled to both national and international events with the U16 team. In addition, the University of Wyoming has hosted Region IV camps the last two summers and Grant has coordinated those camps and served on the camp staff.
A native of Denver, Colorado, Grant attended high school in Watertown, Connecticut.
