The Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team (0-2 overall) finished play at the Soccer Etc./Nike Classic in Boise, Idaho on Sunday falling 2-1 to the Montana Grizzlies (2-0 overall).

"We started really well today," Cowgirl head coach Danny Sanchez said. "We had a lot of chances today which I was very pleased with."

According to Sanchez, the Cowgirls began with some good chances to score but were unable to get any past the UM keeper Kristen Hoon. After the good start by the Cowgirls, the Grizzlies matched UW's pressure and put in the go-ahead goal. In the 17th minute, UM's Ashley Tombelaine received a cross from her teammate India Watne and kicked the ball past UW goalkeeper Courtney Merkle. The score gave the Grizzlies a 1-0 advantage. With the 1-0 deficit the Cowgirls kept the pressure on the Grizzlies and scored the equalizer 12 minutes later. In the 29th minute, Cowgirl Sara Paul took a pass from Kayla Davis and fired a shot from 30-yards out that hit the back of the Montana net tying the score at one. The equalizing goal was the first goal of Paul's Cowgirl career. The first half ended with the Cowgirls and the Grizzlies tied at one.

"After we went down early I was very pleased with how we battled back," Sanchez added. "Sara scored a very nice goal today."

The second half began with UW and UM tied at one goal apiece. The Cowgirls and the Grizzlies each had two shots on goal during the early minutes of the second half, but neither could break the 1-1 tie. With both teams battling to get the go-ahead goal it was the Grizzlies that broke the tie with just seven minutes left in the game. After a UW penalty in the 84th minute Montana took a free kick from midfield. The Grizzlies' Lauren Costa put the free kick into the UW box and Erin Craig put her head to the ball past UW keeper Merkle making the score 2-1 in favor of Montana. The 2-1 score would hold to as the final horn sounded.

"We had a couple really good chances to score in the second half, but we could just not get the equalizer," Sanchez said.

The Cowgirls outshot the Grizzlies 15-14 in the game and took 11 corner kicks to Montana's six.

Next up for the Cowgirls will be two road games next weekend, Aug. 26 and 28. On Friday, Aug. 26 UW will travel to Orem, Utah to take on Utah Valley beginning at 7 p.m. MT. UW will then travel to Boulder, Colo. on Sunday, Aug. 28 to take on Colorado with kickoff set for 1 p.m. MT.
