LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming Soccer team finished their preseason with a dominating 6-0 victory over the Northern State Wolves today.
The Cowgirls were much improved from their last game and came out with a vengeance. Fifteen minutes into play, Sara Stephens scored unassisted. Kelly McShane netted a goal under ten minutes later on the assist by Sancy Florquist. Florquist, then scored herself only minutes later. A tired NSU team emptied their bench with substitutions, but could not keep the Cowgirls from scoring again, this time by Meredith Russo. The Cowgirls went into the half with an unprecedented 4-0 lead.
Period two was much like the first, though this time the Wolves held the Cowgirls to scoring only two more goals. The first by Sara Stephens five minutes into the half off the pass from Kelly McShane, and the second twelve minutes later by Jessica Piccone. Laura Miceli helped out on the assist. NSU goalies had 21 saves in the 44 shots taken by the Cowgirls, most prevalently by Kelly McShane who took seven shots. Renee' Minero, Jessica Piccone and Katrina Morton all took four shots, contributing to the 15 Cowgirls who had shots. Goalkeepers Amanda Vandervort and Sara Kuyper were largely unused with one save for Vandervort on the only shot-on-goal taken by the Wolves.
"I think everyone did a good job," said head coach Anne Moore. "We used this game to try girls in a lot of different positions. The speed of play needs to be a lot quicker, but this will definitely give them confidence in our games against Boise State and Hawaii this weekend."
