Cowgirls Tie Northern Colorado 3-3 in Exhibition Play

In it's only exhibition game of the2002 season, the University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team tied theUniversity of Northern Colorado 3-3 Saturday afternoon at the UW SoccerStadium in Laramie.

Wyoming got on the scoreboard first on a goal by sophomore MelissaBowman, fifteen minutes into the game. UNC would go on to score thenext two goals to take a 2-1 lead midway through the first half. TheBears would only lead briefly as UW sophomore Meghan Racette would tiethings at 2-2 less than a minute after UNC took a one goal lead. Bothteam went into the half tied, 2-2.

The Cowgirls would take the lead once again when junior transfer TuvaGulbrandsen scored on an assist from Lindsey Vossbrink twenty minutesinto the second half. Northern Colorado scored an equalizer late in thegame when Sara Peterson beat UW goalkeeper Sarah Kuyper. The exhibitiongame ended in a 3-3 tie.

"It seemed like we were a little nervous in the first half and weren'treally playing well as a team," said Wyoming head coach Anne Moore."In the second half we started to work things out and settle down.That's what's so great about playing an exhibition game, you get a gameunder your belt and you're able to work on some things and get a feelof a gametime situation against somebody else ."

Wyoming split its goalkeeping duties between junior Lori Scheider andsenior Sarah Kuyper. Scheider played the entire first half stopping oneof four shots on goal while Kuyper stopped three of five shots on goalin the second half. Vossbrink led the team in assists with two whileGulbrandsen led the team in shots with four. For the game Wyomingattempted nine shots, four of those on goal.

"Overall it was a positive to see us score and create some goals. Onthe flip side we made a few mistakes defensively which caused as to bescored upon which we need to work out. At this point we need to get theteam consistently playing well for a full 90 minutes rather than playingwell for 15 minutes and then taking 15 minutes off." Moore said.

The Cowgirls begin their regular season Saturday, Aug. 31 when the playagainst Alabama-Birmingham in Honolulu, Hi., at the OHANA Hotels andResorts No Ka Oi Tournament. The first home match of the 2002 seasonwill be Sept. 8 when the take on Sacramento State.
