LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team lost its season opener to Gonzaga 3-1, Friday evening at the UW Soccer Stadium.
Gonzaga got on the scoreboard early when Annie Hawkins scored three minutes into the game on an Ashley Prior assist. The Bulldogs then took a 2-0 lead on a Sarah Hawkins penalty kick at the 18:59 mark.Despite outshooting Gonzaga 10-4 in the first half, the Cowgirls trailed 2-0 after the first 45 minutes.
Gonzaga built its lead early in the second half when Sarah Hawkins scored her second goal of the game at the 52:19 mark. Two minutes later, the Cowgirls answered with their first goal of the game on a shot by senior Mari Gomes. The goal however was too little and too late and the game ended in a 3-1 Gonzaga win.
"We came out a little bit timid and we weren't as mentally prepared as we could have been," said UW head coach Anne Moore."I think we waited to see what they were going to do and that cost us a couple of early goals. Once we started to play, we had a lot of opportunities, missed a penalty kick and hit the post a couple of times. We need to do a better job of capitalizing on our opportunities. All we can do is learn from this and turn it around on Sunday."
The Cowgirls will return to action Sunday afternoon when they face Eastern Washington. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the UW SoccerStadium.
