LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team didn't just beat the Montana Grizzlies on Sunday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex, they had to beat the elements.
After a disappointing season opener on Friday, the Cowgirls bounced back with a big 1-0 win over the University of Montana Grizzlies in a mudfest in the final game of the third annual UniWyo Shootout.
"Our goal today was to come out and play better as a team," head coach Anne Moore said. "We needed to play more focused and I think we accomplished that today."
With the victory, the Cowgirls improve to 1-1 on the season.
The Cowgirls came out in the first half playing like a team on a mission. As the rain poured down and the field became sloppy, the Cowgirls seemed to play even harder and with more determination. It didn't take long for the Cowgirls to get on the board as sophomore midfielder Amanda Lathrop scored the game's first and only goal in the 4th minute of the first half. Comfort Adetoye, a sophomore forward, blasted a shot that hit the post and Lathrop was there to put the rebound in.
"The first half was awesome. The second half was a little sloppier, but that had a lot to do with the conditions," Moore added.
Even though the second half followed the trend of the sloppy field, the Cowgirls were able to outlast the Grizzlies and come away with the victory.
"I was really proud of how our team rebounded today after the way we played Friday, it was a good team win," Moore said.
In other shootout action, Utah Valley State defeated Tulsa 2-1. All four shootout teams finished the weekend with a 1-1 record.
The Cowgirls will return to action next weekend as they travel to ACC country for the first time in Wyoming soccer history. They will open the weekend Friday September 1st at North Carolina State and will play Wake Forest on Sunday September 3rd.
