The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team lost its season opener to the University of Georgia by a score of 3-0 Friday evening at the UW Soccer Stadium.
Except for a seven minute lull, the Cowgirls hung toughwith SEC conference foe Georgia. The Bulldogs scored three goals in a 7:18 span to claim the 3-0 victory. Randi-Lynn Bruso started the scoring for Georgia when she scored an unassisted goal at the 31:00 minute mark. Just minutes later, Tricia McKee found Kelly Whitaker for a 33:29 goal.Finally, Andrea Velasco scored on an assist from Kara Kennyat 38:18 to put the Bulldogs up 3-0.
Strong defense and goalkeeping were the story for the restof game for both schools. Georgia goalie Ashley Lindley was credited with the shut-out as she made six saves in the game. However, the story of the second half was the strong goaltending by Cowgirl Lori Scheider. Scheider rebounded from a rough first half, to record six second half saves.She saved nine shots on the day.
"The work ethic was there for 90 minutes, it was just acouple of mental errors that cost us," said UW head coachAnne Moore. "Overall I was very pleased with the level ofplay and our ability to step up against a tough team."
The Cowgirls will have a chance to rebound quickly as the University of Northern Colorado travels to Laramie for a Tuesday match at the UW Soccer Stadium. Start time isscheduled for 4:00 pm.
