Sept. 1, 1999

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Denver at Wyoming - Tie 1-1 - Box Score

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl Soccer team went into double overtime today with the Denver Pioneers to tie 1-1. The first goal of the game came from DU in the 29th minute, when Andrea Raleigh took a shot off of a free kick and put it past UW goalkeeper Amanda Vandervort into the upper corner of the net. DU then held the Cowgirls from scoring in the first half, however, in the second half, Cowgirl freshman forward Sarah Stephens got her shot past DU's goalie Erica Izard to make the score one to one. About ten minutes into the first overtime the game was delayed fifteen minutes due to a lighting storm and thundershower.

The Cowgirls and Pioneers each had fifteen shots on goal and matched up evenly offensively. Junior midfielder, Anne Maddock and junior forward, Kelly McShane led the Cowgirl's offensive effort with five shots each. Katrina Morton also helped the Cowgirl effort with four shots.

Wyoming's next opponent will be Sept. 3 with Colorado College at home. The Cowgirls then go on the road for three games against Colorado, Gonzaga and Washington State.

Post-game quotes from UW head coach Anne Moore -

?We are starting to compose ourselves a little bit better. We don't have as many breakdowns, it is just a matter of getting them confident enough so that they don?t mentally lapse and they play for ninety minutes and not a couple minutes here and a couple minutes there. But I think it is starting to get better, it's still not one hundred percent. Obviously we didn't win so there are things that we still need to work on, but mentally it?s just getting them up, and it?s almost that they get too worked up for the game and they just need to relax and play the way we know how to play.

?I was happy with the effort that they continued to play, because it's not the easiest thing going ninety minutes and then an extra half an hour of overtime. It?s just composure, I would like to see them be a little more relaxed with the ball at their feet and attack with more of a purpose because towards the end we were just kicking it and that's not the way I want them to play as a team.

About the Overtime: ? I think that they got a little too excited almost, especially with the rain delay. They came out and were in a rhythm and then the rain delay kind of messes them up a little bit as far as their concentration, in that they were getting almost too hiped up when they came out and they were making silly mistakes when they should have been a little more composed.?
