LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirls played their first overtime game of the season on Sunday, but Montana scored the game winning goal in overtime to beat Wyoming 2-1 at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
"We didn't perform well enough to win today. We are a little disappointed we weren't able to get another goal in the first half, but give all the credit to Montana, they got the goals and we didn't," said UW head coach Danny Sanchez.
Wyoming jumped ahead at the 27:09 mark when senior Corey Theiman scored on a header off of a corner kick from Emily Layton. The goal is Theiman's second of the season and the first assist for Layton.
Montana battled back in the second half and tied the game at one when sophomore Kaitlyn Heinsohn scored on a pass from Anna Pingree in the 48th minute. The score stayed tied at one until Heinsohn scored her second goal of the game and gave the Grizzlies the 2-1 victory in over time.
"On the last goal Montana battled harder than we did and they got the goal because of it," Sanchez added. "We had some missed opportunities that we need to take advantage of in the future."
The next four games for the Cowgirls will be on the road. UW will take on the University of Idaho on Friday, September 12, and then Gonzaga on Sunday, September 14. The Cowgirls will also take part in the Idaho State Classic in Pocatello, Idaho September 19-21 before returning home against Utah State on September 28.
