LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team beat Illinois State 1-0 Sunday morning to finish 2-0 at the 2004 La Quinta Mountain Classic, in Flagstaff, Ariz. With the win, the Cowgirls improved their overall record to 3-1-2.
Senior Mari Gomes scored the game winning goal at the 75:11 mark whenshe took a cross at the 18 yard box from junior Mercy Adetoye and beatthe Illinois State keeper for the lone goal of the game. The goal isGomes fifth of the year.
The Cowgirls held Illinois State scoreless for the remaining 15minutes to pick up the 1-0 win.
Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Sheppard earned her first career win andshutout, making a career high 11 saves.
"It was a very good team effort, everyone contributed and our workethic was great," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "It was a prettytight game and both teams played very physical. Our defense heldstrong and Kara Walters and Kristen Stangl had great games in themiddle. Ashley Sheppard had some great saves and Jessica Brown playedreally well and stepped up to fill in for an injured Sarah Skinner."
The Cowgirls will return to action next weekend when they travel toBoulder, Colo. to play in the Colorado Women's Soccer Classic. TheCowgirls will take on Denver next Friday and Louisiana State onSunday. Friday's game is set for 2 p.m. and Sunday's game willkickoff at 11 a.m.
