MISSOULA, Mont. -
Wyoming Cowgirl Soccer, (5-3-0 overall), won their third consecutive game defeating the Eastern Washington Eagles, (0-4-1 overall), 3-0 on Sunday.
"I think we were able to keep the pressure on Eastern and in the second half we got three nice goals," said UW head coach Danny Sanchez. "It really helps our confidence getting quality wins on the road."
The first half between the Cowgirls and the Eagles began with both teams offenses controlling early. Eastern Washington's Lauren Jacobsen was able to take the first shot of the game against the Cowgirls in the fourth minute, the shot went wide and hit the post of the UW goal. Wyoming was able to get its first shot off three minutes later. Cowgirl Ellen McCormick put the first UW shot on goal forcing Eagle goalkeeper Lisa Dimak to make the save. The Cowgirls were able to take nine more shots during the half, but only two more were on goal and none hit the back of the net. At halftime the score remained tied, 0-0, between Wyoming and Eastern Washington.
In the second half the Cowgirl offense caught a spark and was able to put the ball in the back of the Eastern Washington net. Wyoming's offensive attack started quickly in the second half as Nahiomy Ortiz put the first shot of the half on-goal just one minute in. UW took four shots with two of them on goal in the first five minutes of the half. The sudden offensive pressure from the Cowgirls caused a break down from Eastern Washington allowing the first UW goal of the day. In the 57th minute Cowgirl Jenny Johnson was able to head the ball in off a Liz O'Reilly free kick. Wyoming's offense stayed on the attack and was able to get another goal on the Eagles just one minute after their first. The Cowgirls second goal was set up just like their first off a short O'Reilly free kick and senior defender Chelsea Coddington headed the ball passed Eagles' keeper Dimak. The Eagle defense was not able to slow down the Wyoming attack as UW scored their third goal of the game in the 73rd minute. Cowgirl Carmen Blume scored her first goal of the 2010 season on a chip shot over the EWU keeper's head, making the score 3-0. Blume was assisted on her goal by Shalayne Janis and Katie Amsberry. The Cowgirls would cruise to the final whistle defeating the Eagles, 3-0.
"Eastern was able to get a shot off early that hit the post, but I felt from then on that our defense really tightened up and limited their opportunities," added Sanchez.
Wyoming outshot Eastern Washington 22 to 14 in the game with 11 of the 22 shots on goal. The Cowgirls also recorded their second shutout of the weekend and their fourth of the season. Cowgirls Chelsea Coddington and Carmen Blume scored their first goals of the season for UW. Wyoming's Jenny Johnson scored her second game winning goal of the season in today's game.
The Cowgirls will continue their five game road trip on Friday, Sept. 17 in Omaha, Neb. taking on the Creighton Jays at 7 p.m. Mountain Time. Wyoming will also be in action Sunday, Sept. 19 in Des Moines, Iowa taking on the Drake Bulldogs at 11 a.m. Mountain Time.
