Strong Second Half Vaults Wyoming to 3-0 Shutout of Northern Iowa

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccerteam won their second game of the season on Sunday as they defeated theUniversity of Northern Iowa, 3-0 at UW Soccer Stadium in Laramie.

Wyoming had a strong offensive attack in the first half, but failed to get on thescoreboard. The Panther defense was able to prevent any scoring despite the11 shots taken by the Cowgirls. Northern Iowa took nine shots in the halfas both teams went to the locker room with the score at 0-0. UW juniorgoalkeeper, Lori Scheider, had seven of her ten total saves in thefirst half.

The Cowgirls came out alive in the second half and were able to capitalize. Twenty-two minutes into the half, the first goalwas scored for Wyoming, credited to Renee' Minero, of Petaluma, Calif., withan assist from UW freshman Katie Mak. Just three minutes later Mak scoredthe second goal of the game off of a penalty kick, improving the score to2-0. The final goal of the game came with only three and a half minutesleft to play, when Mari Gomes scored an unassisted goal, finalizing theCowgirl victory at 3-0.

"They (Wyoming) came out the second half and really started to finish theopportunities," said UW soccer head coach Anne Moore. "We had a bunch thefirst half that should have been goals. Their goalkeeper had an outstandinggame and came out with some big time saves. I was happy with the way ourteam was able to continue to pressure them, not get frustrated and find theback of the net."

Five cautions were distributed between the two teams during the physicalmatchup.

"I had heard that Northern Iowa was a pretty physical team," said Moore."They are feisty, but they work hard and are little bit physical. We knewgoing in that they were going to be that way. The referees tried to controlit as best as he could. It was a tough game for him to call."

With the win, the Cowgirls improve their record to 2-3-1 on the season.They will finish the current five game homestand next weekend as they takeon Weber State University on Friday and Utah State on Sunday.
