University of Wyoming freshman Mara Cosgrove scored her first career goal to lift Wyoming past UC Riverside 1-0 on Sunday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. With the win, Wyoming went 1-1 in the 2009 UniWyo Cowgirl Classic.
Overall Wyoming advances to 5-4-2 while the Highlanders drop to 5-3-3.
"We are pleased to get the win against a good opponent in UC Riverside," said UW head coach Danny Sanchez. "There were very few chances for both teams today, but we got the goal we needed. This win built some confidence in our team today."
Wyoming took the lead in the second half when Emma Wilson took a corner kick. Her pass crossed in front of the UC Riverside goal and Cosgrove was able to head in her first career goal.
After the goal, the Cowgirls kept the pressure on the Highlanders and continued to play strong defense. Freshman Courtney Merkle made six saves in the shutout victory. UW has now won four games this season by shutting out their opponent.
Wyoming took 11 shots in the game while UC Riverside attempted 10. Wyoming now holds a home record of 4-2 this year.
Mountain West Conference play will start next weekend for the Cowgirls. On Friday, Air Force will host the Cowgirls in Colorado Springs, Colo. starting at 5 p.m. After Air Force, the Cowgirls will play an internationally televised game on Fox Soccer Channel against Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo. at 3 p.m.
