The University of Wyoming women's soccer team had three players notch their first goal of their career in a 3-0 win over Fresno State Sunday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. Wyoming is now 5-2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Mountain West.
"To have three players get their first goal of the season is something that we need," UW soccer head coach Pete Cuadrado said. "It's great to have that happen, it shows that it was a team win and that everyone was playing well and creating chances."
Freshman midfielder Annika Clayton recorded the first of the afternoon for the Cowgirls with a header off a free kick from sophomore forward Shaina Ashouri in the 16th minute of the match. Sophomore midfielder Summer Halle tallied the second goal in the 41st minute off a pass from junior forward Laurel Ramer, who received a cross from Ashouri. Freshman defender Taylor Burton headed in the last goal for the Cowgirls in the 67th minute off a free kick from Ashouri.
The Cowgirls dominated the match on both sides of the pitch tallying 13 shots, two corners and forcing their fifth shutout of the season. Wyoming's defense only allowed four shots from the Bulldogs, all of them coming in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper Cassidy Entsminger recorded the only saves of the match with two.
Ashouri led UW in shots and assists with three. Clayton and junior defender Katie Marcheso each recorded two shots. Defenders Alisha Bass and Kimmy Burbank and forwards Laurel Ramer and Kayla Cryer had one shot of their own as well.
The match against FSU concludes the six-game stretch at home for the Cowgirls. Wyoming will return to action on Friday against Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.
