LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Freshmen Kaitlyn Lomsnes and Claire Parker notched first-half goals to help the University of Wyoming women's soccer team to a 3-0 Mountain West win over UNLV on Sunday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. The victory was UW's first over UNLV in regulation time since 2007 and maintained the Cowgirls' perfect 3-0-0 record at home this season. Wyoming is currently tied for first in the MW standings after starting the conference season 2-0 for the first time since 2009.
"It feels great to get the win," UW head coach Pete Cuadrado said. "I'm just proud of the effort in finishing plays, not only to put up seven goals this weekend, but also getting two shutouts is a great way to start conference play. We need to make sure that we continue to bring the same effort each game. We're just going to get back to training and focus on this next weekend for two more big games."
Lomsnes, a forward, earned her second-career goal in the 17th minute on Sunday on a mistake from the UNLV defense, as she stole the ball in the penalty box and beat the Rebel goalkeeper to the lower left corner of the net. Parker, a defender, notched the first goal of her UW career in the 39th minute when she put home a shot from the top of the penalty box that Lomsnes assisted on and Wyoming went into halftime with a 2-0 lead. The Cowgirls continued to outhustle the Rebels in the second half, as UW forced an own-goal from the Rebels in the 74th minute to seal the contest.
Wyoming goalkeepers Georgia Rowntree and Alex Boehm continued to impress in the net, as the two have combined for three consecutive shutouts and have not allowed a goal in 333 minutes. Rowntree made three saves in the first half and improved her record this season to 2-1-1, while Boehm added three saves in the second half. Wyoming was outshot 12-8, as UNLV pushed in the second half, but both squads put six shots on goal. The Rebels led 5-3 in corner kicks, as the Cowgirls committed 17 fouls to eight for UNLV.
The Cowgirls return to the road for two matches next weekend. Wyoming plays at Utah State on Friday at 3 p.m. MT and at Boise State on Sunday at noon.
