The University of WyomingCowgirl soccer team was shutout by the University ofCalifornia, Riverside 2-0 Friday evening at the UW SoccerStadium.
The UC Riverside Highlanders needed little time to takeadvantage of the wind being at their back and scored thefirst goal of the game at the 3:56 mark. Kristi Tanaka tooka free kick from about 40 yards out and Vanessa Chanezfinished the lose ball to give the Highlanders an early 1-0lead. The Highlanders continued to pressure the Cowgirldefense throughout the rest of the first half but wereunable to convert any of its six shots. Lori Scheiderrecorded three saves in the half. The Cowgirl offensecouldn't get much going as they traveled into the wind topressure the Highlander goal. The Cowgirls were able tomanage just one shot in the half as UC Riverside took a 1-0advantage into the locker room.
The Cowgirl offense came to life in the second halftallying six shots from six different players. However, thelone goal of the half would be in the favor of theHighlanders. At the 74:46 mark, Vanessa Chanez scored hersecond goal of the game, this time on an assist from LindaAllen. Wyoming could not find an answer and the game endedin a 2-0 UC Riverside win. Scheider came away with foursecond half saves for a total of seven.
"It was a hard fought game. They are a big and physicalteam and we stepped up and played hard," said UW headcoach Anne Moore. "We kind of got pinned at our end withthe wind in the first half and had trouble getting the ballup the field. In the second half, we didn't do a verygood job of finding our players feet and we kept playing theball right to them. Overall, I didn't think we got asmuch going offensively as we could have.
"We had a great week of practice leading in to today andit is very disappointing to lose like this. We need to workon getting back to the basics next week and come back readyto play and come away with a couple of wins next weekend."
The Cowgirls will have the rest of this weekend off beforethey travel to the state of Washington for a pair of gamesnext weekend. The Cowgirls will face Gonzaga Fridayafternoon and Eastern Washington Sunday. Friday's match isset to begin at 3 pm while kickoff is set for 11:30 am onSunday.
