LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Utah proved why theybelong at the top of the Mountain West Conference as they defeated theCowgirl soccer team, 4-1 in an aggressive game at UW Soccer Stadium onThursday. The game marked the first conference competition for both teams.

The Utes jumped ahead early scoring their first goal in the thirteenthminute into the game. Despite having possession of the ball for themajority of the first half, Utah only scored once off of their 11 shots dueto the strong Wyoming defense. Utah senior forward Shauna Gurr-Binghampassed the ball to junior Tracy Stratton for the goal.

"I thought we came out a bit flat," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "Bothteams were a little flat in the first ten minutes and then they (Utah) got agoal. I didn't think the first half was that great for either side, but wedidn't take advantage of them being flat. We were a little slow to getstarted. Utah is a great team. They are very organized."

The Cowgirls were unable to have much control over the ball initially, buttied the game just four minutes into the second half off a goal by Wyomingjunior Renee Minero, assisted by both sophomore Melissa Bowman andjunior-transfer Tuva Gulbrandsen. The goal marked the third for Minero thisseason.

"At the start of the second half we did much better. We pressured them andscored a goal," said Moore.

However, Utah stepped up to demonstrate their dominance in the MWC, withjunior Amber Brower scoring their go-ahead goal from a pass by junior MissyDennis.

A sluggish Cowgirl squad ended up allowing two more goals during thecompetition. Dennis and sophomore Julie Herdic each scored to put the gameout of reach for Wyoming.

The Cowgirls were only able to get five shots off during the game.

"When Utah scored, we quit," said Moore. "We didn't show any effort thoselast twenty minutes. We could have done so much better and maybe have comeback and scored a couple of goals if we hadn't stopped and settled for theloss."

The defeated Wyoming team falls to 4-7-1 (0-1-0 in the MWC) and Utahimproves to 8-1-2 (1-0-0 in the MWC). The Cowgirls host the BYU Cougars onSaturday for the second conference match-up of the season. The Cougarsenter the game 7-5-0 (1-0-0 in the MWC), defeating Air Force in their firstconference competition.
