COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Juniors Tamika Wilson and Amanda Lathrop scored goals to give the Cowgirls their first road victory of the season as Wyoming defeated the Falcons of Air Force 2-0 on Sunday in Colorado Springs. Wyoming improves to 6-7-0, 1-1-0 in the MWC while Air Force slips to 2-10-2, 0-3-0 in the MWC.
"We did a good job of battling the conditions today to get a much needed win on the road," UW head coach Anne Moore said. "It turned into a rough game, but we did what we had to do to get the victory."
The Cowgirls scored their first goal of the game at the 23:23 mark as Wilson turned a ball from junior Laine Hubbard and put a nice shot in the lower left corner from 12 yards out. The goal was Wilson's seventh of the year, 16th of her career.
Wyoming's second goal came in the second half as Lathrop received a nice pass from freshman Juliana Candelaria and put a beautiful shot in the upper right corner from 30 yards out. The goal was Lathrop's sixth of the year and 11th of her career.
"Both Amanda (Lathrop) and Tamika (Wilson) have done a great job for us up top this year," Moore said. "They both continue to make the most of their opportunities and gives us a big lift."
Wyoming out shot Air Force 10-8 and senior keeper Ashley Sheppard earned her second shutout of the year (15th of her career) Sunday. Wyoming's first road win proved to be an important one as the Cowgirls head into the heart of their conference schedule.
"This was a huge win for us today," Moore continued. "We really needed to get this win and earn the split on the road after losing to New Mexico Friday. Road wins are huge, especially in our conference and I think we gained some momentum as we head back to Laramie to take on TCU and then head to San Diego to face the Aztecs."
Wyoming returns to the Gem City to face the TCU Horned Frogs on Friday, October 19, at 3 p.m. in the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. The Cowgirls will then head to San Diego to face the Aztecs on Sunday, October 21, at 2 p.m.
