LAS VEGAS, Nev. -
The University of Wyoming Cowgirl Soccer team (6-8-1 overall, 0-2-1 Mountain West Conference) fell to the UNLV Rebels (9-5 overall, 1-2 MWC), 3-2, on Thursday night in Las Vegas.
The Cowgirls and the Rebels came out of the gates firing with both teams applying early pressure. Wyoming was able to strike first in the third minute of the game just after an early UW corner kick. Cowgirl Chelsea Coddington took the corner kick, but it was cleared by the UNLV defense. Wyoming's Jules Candaleria gathered in the clearance and took the long shot putting the ball in the top left corner of the UNLV net past keeper Kylie Wassell. UNLV was able to answer the Cowgirls pressure by getting off two consecutive shots, one resulting in a goal. In the 16th minute, the Rebels Amanda Forrester took a pass from Sarah Naranjo about 20 yards from the UW goal and kicked it in the back of the net, tying the score 1-1. The Rebels kept the offensive pressure on taking three shots in a row, but the UW defense stiffened and did not allow another goal in the first half. The Cowgirls had one more shot on goal during the first half in the 30th minute, UW's Carmen Blume put the ball on net but UNLV keeper Wassell had the answer keeping it out. The Cowgirls and the Rebels went to the locker rooms at halftime tied, 1-1.
The second half between UW and UNLV began very quickly with a goal by each team coming in the first five minutes. Starting things off quickly Wyoming's Ellen McCormick out ran the UNLV defense and put a short shot past UNLV's Wassell giving the Cowgirls a 2-1 advantage in the 49th minute. McCormick was assisted on her goal by fellow freshman Liz O'Reilly. The UW lead was short lived as the Rebels Forrester took a loose ball in the UW penalty area and kicked it in the back of the UW net for her second goal of the game just one minute later in the 50th minute. Wyoming's O'Reilly attempted to answer right back, but her shot went wide of the goal. The Rebels kept the offensive pressure on the Cowgirls taking seven shots over the next 25 minutes, and the UW defense could not keep them all out. In the 83rd minute UNLV's Ashleigh Shoughro beat the defenders to the ball just outside the UW penalty area and put the ball past UW keeper Merkle, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Rebels. Shoughro was assisted by Courtney Botelho on her goal. Shoughro's late goal proved to be the game winning goal and the score held, 3-2 in favor of the Rebels.
With her seventh assist on the season in tonight's game UW's Liz O'Reilly moved into a tie for second place on the Cowgirls single season assist list.
Cowgirl Soccer will stay on the road this weekend traveling to San Diego, Calif. on Saturday to take on the San Diego State Aztecs, with the match beginning at 12 p.m. Mountain Time.
